A wine of pure Barossa fruit by a master who loves Shiraz and is devoted to the valley he calls home. Johann Gramp planted the Barossa's first commercial vineyard along the banks of Jacob's Creek in 1847. He had no intention of establishing a brand, he just needed wine. Today's Gramp is vinified from a collation of the finest parcels grown to superb sites in McLaren Vale. Regular inspections of vineyards with a proven record for quality, consistency and character are conducted to pinpoint the most opportune dates for harvest. Following a traditional vinification and extended ageing, only those barrels of exceptional quality are included into the finished wine.

A decorous Shiraz wine in the robust, fully ripened, effusive plum and pepper style which can only be achieved from fruit grown to the higher, coolly ripened aspects of Valley King. The most intensely flavoured grapes are harvested off diligently husbanded vines, painstakingly pruned to limit yields and concentrate flavour. Treated to a traditional vinification, minimal handling and a spell of ageing in the highest quality French oak, The Stables fills the palate with dark plum fruit, well polished integrated oak, seasoned by complex high country spice.

The balmy aspects of Mount Barker yield the nation's most underrated Shiraz wines. Goundrey were here from the very start, amongst the earliest West Australian pioneers, they were inspired by the achievements of the great Jack Mann to take up viticulture in 1971. They now operate a priceless endowment of the most eminent vineyards in the region. Immediately engaging from first sniff, accessible to all, Great Southern Shiraz in the truest sense, ideally to be savoured alongside a serve of smartly dressed chops, either veal, pork or lamb.

In 2000, a group of enthusiasts who shared a passion for making and imbibing in wine were inspired to breathe life into an old, run down operation in the small western district of Gomersal. The forty two acres of low yielding vines now deliver a limited yield of Shiraz each vintage, a precious harvest of grapes exhibiting remarkable concentration and intensity of flavour. Working amongst the vines and sampling berries as the growing season reaches climax, picking never commences until the team are completely satisfied that complete ripeness has been achieved.

Richly proportioned with mouthfilling savouryness and tannins in full bloom, Beechworth makes mighty Shiraz. Golden Ball pick theirs in three stages, based on perfect timing of each parcel, day by day as the fruit achieves optimal ripeness. The wild vineyard yeasts of early morning harvest, secondary malolactic ferments and extended maturation in the finest Bordeaux coopered oak, complete a wine of extensive breadth, beguiling roundness and ingratiating complexity. A dark tempest of fruit around a core of taffeta coffee oak, tactile flint and brooding tannin briar.

Prior to launching Glen Eldon, Richard Sheedy consolidated on his experience as winemaker by taking charge at two world class purveyors of Barossa Shiraz, the equally eminent houses of Elderton and St Hallett. Sheedy knows from Barossa Shiraz, his estate vineyard at Tanunda on the Valley floor was selected for its mesoclime and distinctive flavours imparted to the wine. An alchemy of soil and rainfall, row facing and pruning, combined with attention to detail in vineyard management yields small yet concentrated bunches of vibrant Shiraz grapes.

Only ever made in the finest vintage years, the backbone of this substantive Shiraz is exceptional old vine fruit from a qabal of famed, gnarled and dry grown Barossa vineyards at Ebenezer. Bishop is assembled from components which are up front and generous, showing animated, youthful characters, as opposed to the more restrained and structured components of the sibling Glaetzers. These old veterans are young at heart, a coterie of old, very old and ancient blocks, up to a hundred and thirty years of age, are called upon to make a contribution towards the Bishop.

Ben Glaetzer takes aim at balancing the extraction of all the elements into this flagship Barossa Shiraz, rather than endeavouring to maximize them. The fruit holds such powerful expression that focus must be brought to bear on preserving the characteristics of outstanding old vines Shiraz.

Much of the fruit behind Australia's most memorable wines has hailed from Langhorne Creek, stellar vintages which are commemorated for decades throughout the globe, as the most outstanding efforts in new world Shiraz. These precious old vineyards are productive to this day, yielding finer harvests than ever. The Messrs Glaetzer & Potts have been retaining the best for Gipsie Jack, no two industry identities can be more adroit at treating the pick of Langhorne Creek, to a standard of vinification which defines the penultimate Aussie Shiraz.

Over many years, Rob Gibson (ex Penfolds and Peter Lehmann as chief viticulturalist) has crafted meagre amounts of the most stately wines from his tiny operation in the Barossa Hills. Vintage 2002 claimed silver at the VISY Great Aussie Shiraz Challenge and vintage 2003 came within a hair's breadth of the Jimmy Watson. Gibson knows the Barossa and all its best growers, varietal selection is expertly matched to site and minimalist winemaking is complemented by assembling the choicest components into the most exquisite balance.

There's a confident assuredness about Australian Shiraz but there's also the chiselled elegance of Yarra Valley Syrah, grown, harvested and crafted in the old world, Cotes du Rhone way. An assemblage of hand picked parcels from separate blocks throughout the Sexton and Tarraford vineyards. A combination of hand picked grapes and whole bunches, treated to cold soak and seeded for ferments, pressed at completion to dryness and gravity fed into a selection of French oak puncheons and barriques, assembled in January, racked and bottled without fining or filtration.

Established 1988 to a bounty of rich, grey loam clays at Tarrawarra, the eminent Tarraford site enjoys a fortuitously slower ripening season than its neighbouring climes. Planted to a diversity of aspect and clones, managed to a regimen of old world biodynamic farming practices, Tarraford delivers a magnificent harvest of Rhone styled Shiraz each year. Redolent with licorice, pepper and meats, pursing dark, cherry oak tannins and the astringency of wild bramble, its herb infused palate supported by characuterie notes, sasafras and game.

A living legend of the Australian wine industry, Merrill Reserve has claimed Australia's most prestigious awards, including Jimmy Watson and Visy Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. Merrill Reserve is a compilation of his best wines, as selected from a vintage of small parcels which have been treated to an extended maturation. Merrill Reserve can be best described as voluptuous and seductive, laden with complex chocolatier flavours and tensile textures, beckoning and beguiling before revealing the stately structure within.

Take your pick from the estate cellars of Geoff Merrill Shiraz, richly aged two years in a selection of French and American oak hogsheads and puncheons, assemble into the essential meat and vegetable McLaren Vale style. Blood red, mulberry and currant spice, moccha and milled pepper throughout, a lick of menthol, the savouryness of leather, black olive and savoury smoked meats. Jacko's the drink to open and to breathe for service alongside your favourite recipe of red wine casserole, kipflers and shallot, dutch carrots and Jus.

Henley demands a sensory evaluation to identify the finest barrels of Geoff Merrill Shiraz. The choicest parcels are earmarked and set aside each year for a course of maturation in the finest French oak. After fifteen months, the stocks are sampled to identify a short list of the very best, refilled to oak for a further course of maturation into the eminent Geoff Merrill Reserve. The final cut of this elite cull represents a strictly limited edition of the most superlative Shiraz in all McLaren Vale, only ten barrels each vintage are worthy of bottling under the Henley moniker.

Perfect balance in wine cannot be manufactured, it occurs naturally. Gemtree achieves this elusive idyll. Uncut has distinguished itself throughout the vintages with Double Gold in San Fransisco, Blue Gold in Sydney and Silver Great Australian Shiraz Challenge. Hand selected from forty year old vines grown to the estate's Tatachilla Road Vineyard, Uncut Shiraz requires very little intervention. The synergy between fruit and oak, acid and tannin are seamless and sublime.

Ernest Allan Rivers was a highly gifted agriculturalist who possessed an uncanny understanding of the soil, seasons and harvest. The Gemtree viticutural team have assembled parcels of Shiraz from a number of elite blocks, picked to a schedule holistically determined by the vagaries of vintage for optimal flavour and tannin ripeness, naturally fermented on skins for a fortnight, pressed and drained into French oak barriques for aging on gross lees over the course of twenty months. Assembled to a style that's characterised by seamlessness, generosity and warmth.

After years of self management, the ancient Garden Gully vines have been nursed back to health, for harvests of the most exemplary fruit. Exacting regimens of pruning and the close husbanding of vines were an act of faith, the task was completed successfully and the ancient plantings were restored to their former glory. The old block closest to the cellar door, so true to enduring local folklore, yields harvests of world class Shiraz. Vintage 2006 claimed Judges Trophy and Best Wine Victorian Wine Challenge.

An assemblage of King Valley fruit, some parcels acquire their individuality in the vineyard, while others develop their charm in the vinification and ageing. Previous vintages have claimed conspicuous accolades including a silver medal at the prestigious London International. Much of the fruit is sourced from eminent sites around Whitfield in King Valley, not far from the Gapsted wineworks. Growing conditions can be close to perfect in these higher altitudes and the team make it a priority to capture and preserve the exceptional quality of Shiraz.

Yalumba have been making the Galway range of wines since the 1940s, named in honour of Colonel Sir Henry L. Galway, governor of South Australia from 1914 to 1920. He was a keen wine man with a good palate and was a regular visitor to the Yalumba wineworks at Angaston. Success with the early editions of Galway were the foundation upon which Yalumba built it's peerless reputation for fine Barossa reds. Galway is still made to the enduring traditional style with rich colour, distinctive spicy fruit and perfectly integrated oak, balanced and elegant.

Galli's Camelback vineyard, situated northeast of the Heathcote township, enjoys a warmer clime, and the rainfall is always very limited. Growing seasons are normally dry with relatively even temperature ranges during veraison. Shiraz wines from this vineyard are delightfully flavoursome with earthy notes and a finely structured palate of some elegance, distinctive varietal character and sturdy tannins.

Isolation Ridge are part of a larger wool growing enterprise. The decision to diversify the farm and plant vines came after a tour of French vineyards and two vintages worked at Bordeaux's Chateau Senejac. The Isolation Ridge vineyard is managed to organic viticultural practices which is reflected in the depth and concentration and palate weight of the finished wine. An elegant, tightly knit Shiraz wine that unfolds to reveal opulent flavours and savoury stylishness, the fruit of meticulous care in the vineyard and winery.

Short Row is crafted from harvests of intensely flavoured Shiraz grapes, sourced off the best McLaren Vale blocks and from Fox Creek 's own short rows of vine, adjacent to the estate cellars. Short Row boasts an illustrious history of wine show triumphs ever since inaugural release. Endowed with rich and powerful aromas, an amazing palate of blackberry fruit, toast and sweet red berries, all wrapped in velvety soft tannins, culminating with a long and dry, flavoursome finish. The classic McLaren Vale style, it responds well to a course of decanting.

Excellent Langtons Classification. An eminent performer on the international wine show circuit, one of the nation's most celebrated Shiraz, the best of McLaren Vale. Fox Creek Reserve is assembled from a ruthless barrel cull of the best parcels to come out of each vintage. Offering great weight of fruit on the palate, an extraordinary range of flavours, the finish is long and legendary. Highly cellarable yet fully approachable when young, a Shiraz of great purity and unequivocally fine acidity, decanting and breathing are a must.

The Baron is back, gladly exchanging his bright red triplane for a bottle or two of good red wine. This suave Shiraz is crafted from some of the best Fox Creek estate grown fruit, much in the same way as the eponymous flying ace took out his pick of prey in the skies over France. A smooth, satisfying effort by one of Mclaren Vale's baronial winemaking estates, rich in character, distinctive in style and silky in texture, guaranteed to charm and to captivate. Introduce the Baron to barbequed scotch fillets or a potato crusted meatball pie.

The Four Sisters are called upon countless times each day, at luncheon tables around the country, to deliver the quality of wine which makes a success out of every meal. The Four Sisters are the specialists, they love making wine almost as much as they enjoy drinking it. One of Australia's most cherished and enduring Shiraz, consistent and approachable, full of ripe plum and dulcet jube flavours, gently spiced and delicately enhanced by a treatment of supple oak, supported by a measure of soft, flattering tannins.

Established 1965, Forest Hill is the oldest cool climate vineyard in Western Australia and the first ever commercial planting in all of Great Southern. This solidly structured Shiraz demonstrates the virtues of a region that's endowed with an outstanding potential to craft the most intensely structured Rhone style wines. A medium bodied, fleshy style, Forest Hill displays white pepper and subtle spice on the palate enhanced by delicate toasty vanilla and perfumed Burgundian oak flavours, fine chewy tannins and a full firm finish.

Forest Hill work hard at extracting the best possible Shiraz out of Block 9. Better soil maintenance with no herbicides and more composted material, while leaf plucking is applied earlier in the season and more diligently. The maturity of the vines, management of the property and evolution in the quality of fruit all impact on the excellence of the finished wine. Its long and fine, chewy structure is dominated by bold varietal fruit characters, while the background gamey nuances intensify the palate, along with subtle earthiness and sweet spice undertones.

Greg and Natala Flynn established their operation on the narrow strip of ancient red cambrian Heathcote soils which produce world class Shiraz wines. MC stands for multiple clones, when planting their vineyard, the Flynns sowed a number of different clones with the aim of increasing complexity in the wines. Endowed with a vigorously perfumed bouquet and graceful palate, MC Shiraz is an elegant and controlled Heathcote Shiraz with clear regional personality, treated to an extended ageing in a selection of oak barriques from the world's finest cooperages.

The length of Margaret River's coastline hosts a tapestry of terroirs, each expressing a subtle variation on the profoundly aromatic and intense regional style. Flametree have assembled a collation of fruit from five choice vineyards in the premier viticultural precincts of Wallcliffe, Wilyabrup and Yallingup. A well proportioned wine with seamless integration that's greater than the sum of parts, Wallcliffe grapes contribute a measure of pepper and spice complexity, fruit from vineyards further to the north add rich dark berry characters and a concentration of flavour.

The historic Fire Block vineyard was named for its dangerous proximity to the passing, flame powered railway engines of yesteryear, imperilled by the sparks of the locomotives that often ignited bushfires. Biodynamically grown Shiraz is vinified in the traditional old world way, fermented in four tonne batches, lovingly basket pressed, aged in a combination of French oak barriques and American oak hogsheads. Vibrant bouquet with plum, spice and currant characters, generously flavoured and richly proportioned, showing very well in its youth, a long, illustrious future is assured.

Only those parcels of Shiraz meeting the highest standards of old vine Barossa, can be considered for inclusion into Fernando. Assembled from the pick of eighty year old plantings, Fernando represents the flagship from the noble house of Taylor Ferguson, established 1898. Immediately intense with impenetrable black hues, Fernando's rich bouquet of blood plums, violet and tradewind spice, are followed by a multi layered palate which continues to unravel veils of complexity, seamlessly integrated, between fawning tannins, winegum fruit and fragrant flattering oak.

With each harvest, the Taylor Ferguson team seek to isolate parcels of the finest fruit from which to craft their flagship Shiraz. The selection process is diligent and very strict. Parcels of fruit which are candidates for inclusion must display the requisite qualities of vibrant flavour profile, profound varietal expression and praiseworthy tannins. Fernando The First is vinified from a collation grown to choice vineyards, eighty years of age, a remarkable expression of Barossa Shiraz, its rich chocolatey palate and sound structure are tightly wound around a carriage of polished oak.
